I've really been getting into arcade retro gaming lately. Good games like Space Invaders, Raiden, Asteroids, Galaga, Pacman and some old Mario stuff. There's just something so simple about them that makes them lovable. It's nothing but gaming. Fun (and addictive mind you ;-), wholesome gaming.
My highscore on Raiden is 320440. Not bad for a first try? I only got to level 2.
This is what gaming is all about!
Galaxians was always my favourite. It's cool seeing someone under 30 taking an interest in the retro scene. For most of us it's a nostalgia trip.
ReplyDeleteYou've probably seen my old Vectrex video?
Occasionally I go to car boot sales and I always keep my eyes out for these things:

They were the equivalent of a PSP back in the day, albeit with little more display capability than a digital watch. :-) Great fun, though.
(sob) Now you've made me feel old ... Never! ;-)
I'll have to admit, sometimes I think simple is better. Advanced gaming that we have today is great, but sometimes, simply trying to beat your highscore is fun enough.
ReplyDeleteYeah I've your Vectrex video. I'd love to feel what's it's like to play one.
The oldest gaming console I own is a Sega Mega Drive. Around six games came on cartridges that you'd pop into the console. The controller was very basic. It had A, B and C buttons and a basic D-pad (no joysticks!). I think the console was first released in 1988.

The website URL you copied there has some pretty cool gaming consoles! If only more people were still satisfied with this type of gaming...
I noticed that simple retro games got a bit of a comeback as a result of mobile phones, which obviously didn't have the sort of computing power of an Xbox. It's kind of nice to see old-style games getting a new lease of life.
ReplyDeleteI bought an Xbox 360 several years ago. After playing it for about a year and a half I sold it, because I really got tired of the sheer commitment (sacrifice?) of time and energy required to complete games (usually 20-40 hours game-time). I'm the sort of person who ends up sitting at a game for four hours straight, then having neck pains. :-)
